Road Trip After Hours w/ WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long and Host Mac Davis

Teddy Almost Throws Hands with D-Von Dudley and Luke Gallows

Mac Davis and WWE Hall of FamerTeddy Long

Mac Davis and WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long kick off another engaging episode of Wrestling's Road Trip After Hours with fond memories of their recent appearance at River City Wrestling Con in St. Augustine. The duo shares a heartwarming reunion with WWE Hall of Famer Jackie Moore, complete with hilarious road trip stories that showcase the genuine friendships formed behind the scenes in professional wrestling.

The conversation quickly shifts to current wrestling controversies, starting with Rikishi's comments about his son Jey Uso's WWE booking. Teddy doesn't hold back, agreeing that WWE failed Jey by having him lose his championship too quickly: "It's not how you win the title, it's how you lose it." This prompts a broader discussion about WWE's creative direction and whether the company adequately plans storylines beyond championship victories.

When addressing R-Truth's WWE release, Teddy cuts through the noise with his trademark directness: "It's a shoot." He expresses frustration at what he sees as WWE's attempt to reframe the situation as planned, suggesting the company is trying to cover up what he believes was a mistake. This segment offers viewers a rare glimpse into how wrestling veterans interpret corporate messaging.

Perhaps most striking is their candid assessment of WWE's current ticket pricing strategy, with reports of ringside seats costing $30,000 and nosebleed sections approaching $1,000. "It's greed," Teddy states plainly, reflecting on how economic realities make such prices inaccessible to average fans. Both hosts worry this approach could backfire by driving wrestling enthusiasts toward more affordable independent shows, where fan-wrestler interactions remain personal and meaningful.

The episode features lively audience interaction, with Teddy answering questions about inspirational colleagues (naming JBL) and sharing brief but insightful comments about wrestling personalities like Goldust, Lita, Marty Jannetty, and Mick Foley. Speaker 1:

We'll be right back.

Speaker 2:

Let's do this. Hello everybody, welcome into the room. Make sure you pass this link around so everybody knows we are live right now. Teddy's up close and personal today. Boy, you're right in that camera today, aren't you, teddy? They changed the design of the layouts here, so we're trying something different to see how this looks. But again, everybody, welcome to the show. This is Wrestling's Road Trip After Hours. I'm your host, mac Davis, and of course, that is WWE Hall of Famer, mr Teddy Long. Teddy, I had a great time last weekend. We were in St Augustine, florida, for the River City Wrestling Con, which was a blast.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, me too, man. Well, you know, I've had the chance to attend it for the past three years and every year it gets better and better. So, so happy I was there. I had a chance to see a lot of people that I hadn't seen for a while. We had so much fun with Jackie Moore.

Speaker 2:

I'll tell you what. For those of you who are wondering if you have not seen the, the interview we did with Jackie Morris. It's just a couple of minutes long, but we haven't seen. I haven't seen Jackie in a long time because it's been a while since she's been at these things and to see her back around was phenomenal. And if you didn't get to see or you didn't, you know, watch it live when we did it I'll give you an idea right here about exactly what went down. Hello everybody and welcome to road trip. After hours on the road, teddy and I, of course, are in saint augustine, florida, for river city. So yeah, I'll let you say it this time why you?

Speaker 3:

why you being so proper, trying to use all big-time words and stuff trying to impress Jackie Moore because she's standing there. But I don't blame you. You know to be standing next to a woman that's behind a Jackie Moore, you need to do some impression.

Speaker 1:

Thank you, Teddy.

Speaker 3:

You're very welcome. You're very welcome.

Speaker 2:

Let me ask you a question just out of curiosity have you ever rode with Teddy and taken any car trips with him back in the days where maybe you went way out of the way?

Speaker 1:

I did many road trips with teddy long, but I don't want to talk about that.

Speaker 3:

I don't want to talk about us getting lost well, ladies and gentlemen, in case you're wondering what is happening here, the legendary jackie moore, my best friend in the whole entire world. She was riding with me one night. I just couldn't drive no more. I was so sleepy so we only had about 80 miles to go, but when I woke up I think Jackie Moore took us about 1,250 miles out of the way. I believe we woke up in.

Speaker 1:

Canada. Listen here, teddy. I was tired. Come on, dude. You didn't want to drive. Give me a break. You wanted me to drive the whole way. Give me a break here, okay.

Speaker 3:

Well, I guess there's not much I can say about that.

Speaker 2:

At some point did you think to yourself I need to wake Teddy up because we've gone way too long.

Speaker 1:

I was scared. I was scared he was going to cuss me out.

Speaker 2:

man, I was so scared. Jackie, it's great to have you. I was saying a while ago you look absolutely incredible and I haven't seen you on the circuit much lately, but now you pop back in. It's good to see you again.

Speaker 1:

I'm doing more signings now, but it's great meeting you, mac Davis, there used to be a country singer named.

Speaker 2:

Mac Davis, I remember that, but you're more than him. No, we wasn't him.

Speaker 1:

No, it wasn't him. No, that guy's dead so I hope it's not me.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, right, right, All right, Jackie. What are you doing now? Are you anywhere else? You're going after this show here in St Augustine.

Speaker 1:

You know, the next trip, I think so I will be in WrestleCon. I think it's in New Jersey, I think.

Speaker 3:

SummerSlam, right, SummerSlam yeah.

Speaker 1:

So you booked her right. Are you signing her?

Speaker 3:

Well, I don't know whether I'm going to make that or not. I got something else I'm going to be in Atlanta for Dragon Con.

Speaker 1:

Oh, okay, okay, okay. But you know Teddy does a lot of signings, so I'm trying to catch up with him, you know.

Speaker 3:

I'm trying to hang with him. I'm going to help Jackie out right here because I Asking for her. You know what I mean. So this is a long time coming and we're just glad to have her back out on the scene so everybody can come out and see Jackie, because she was great WWE Hall of Famer.

Speaker 1:

Oh well, that's right, that's right, my bad, my bad, the one and only.

Speaker 3:

And that's true. Yes, absolutely true.

Speaker 2:

Jackie, thank you so much for joining us. We appreciate you being here.

Speaker 3:

Thank yeah.

Speaker 2:

I got a little hug on the neck there from Jackie. I'll tell you what I love about that Teddy was that she's a Southern girl, just a country girl really at heart. And you know I'm a country girl, I'm from the South man and speaking with her and talking with her over the weekend about different things, not just wrestling, but just talking in general such a sweet, classy, southern lady.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, man, yeah, what a sweetheart man. She's a great person.

Speaker 2:

By the way, if you'd like to be a part of the show, all you have to do is drop us a comment in the comment section. We'll throw it up on the screen and answer any questions you may have or comments you have about the show or anything else, maybe even about today's wrestling. But before we get there, I do want to let you know that in a little bit we are going to go back to River City Wrestling Con where Teddy Long was actually trying to throw hands with D-Von and Luke Gallows.

Speaker 3:

That'll be coming up in just a little bit.

Speaker 2:

You're going to see this in a minute. You'll love it. Let me ask you. Teddy Rikishi is in the news right now. He recently commented on his Off the Top podcast about WWE's booking of his son, jey Uso, and he says let me see if I can find it here. Rikishi isn't a fan of Jey's competitors and the storylines. He says, quote I feel I need to have top-not notch players to be able to feed Jay, to let Jay showcase his talent. He went on to say quote because I always think like he worked so hard to get to this top main event spot. Now just don't hold it back now, keep going, keep feeding him, which is kind of something you mentioned the other day on Sportskeeda, where you felt like maybe it was too soon for him to lose that title.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you know, like I said, I hate just even commenting on some of this stuff. But like I said to me and this is my opinion, you know I thought it was too soon. You know I thought he'd get a little bit of a run with it. You know what I thought it was too soon. You know, I thought he'd get a little bit of a run with it. You know what I mean. So sometimes, you know, when you keep it for a minute there and then when you do take it, it means something. Always remember this it's not how you win the title, it's how you lose it. Okay, so that's what you always have to remember.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you know I hated to see that he lost the title so quickly and I've been pretty vocal about the fact on other shows that I feel like WWE failed him. You know he gets that belt and they had the story all the way to the championship. I just don't think they thought past that and because of that, Jay suffers holding that championship. He's not given some of the opportunities or real creative storylines to make people care and no matter how good he is, if the storyline stinks, the storyline stinks. Let me ask you about something else in WWE, Teddy. This is something we've talked about on other shows, but not here R-Truth. He got released. We did talk about that, but there's been a lot of back and forth. Is it a work, Is it a shoot? Teddy Long, what do you say? Work or shoot it's a shoot.

Speaker 3:

Jesus Christ, what does it take for these people? Even Nick Khan WWE is sick.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah is yeah, yeah it's. You know it. What the sad part is is that the wwe came in and they tried to make it sound like it was a work. They tried to sell the fans. This is a work, and every fan out there I don't care if you're young or old everybody pretty much went nah, that's not the case. This guy got fired, you screwed up and now you're trying to cover up the stench of a screw up by saying, oh no, that was planned the whole time. I don't believe that for a second. To me, it's old news. Yep, all right, let's see, we do have.

Speaker 2:

I want to get Reginald in here. Hello, mac and Teddy, how are you? We're doing great, reginald. Yeah, we're good, blair, and let's see a pretty classy lady also in here. My shirt came in last week. I'm going to make a video with it. Good, good, send it to us. We'll throw it up on the screen. Thank you, and if you want to be on the show, just drop us a note right here in the comments section. We'll throw it up on the screen.

Speaker 2:

Else in the news, before we get ready for some of the questions, could Vince McMahon buy back the WWE? According to Eric Bischoff never say never. He says I can't imagine that. He says I can't imagine the scenario where that would be likely. However, it's plausible. Tko might not be interested, but it's a publicly held company. Bischoff went on to say it is possible that Vince McMahon could put together enough money to make an offer for a publicly held company and because it would have a positive, potentially good impact on the shareholder's value, the offer would have to be entertained. That's interesting, teddy, because we've heard a lot of rumors that he'd like to buy it back, but TKO saying it's not for sale, and pretty much what Eric Bischoff's saying. Well, if he has the money behind him and presents him with so much money, they can't say no. Never say never.

Speaker 3:

Well, like I always tell you, every man has a price.

Speaker 2:

That's true, especially if you're right now. You see the, the ratings, and they're not getting better, they're getting worse. If that's the case, Netflix is going to get kind of edgy about everything, so you never know what may happen. I still believe that we will see Vince McMahon one day somewhere somehow back in the public eye, and probably within sports entertainment. Well, I certainly hope so. I do too. I'd like to see his creativity come back, and I know a lot of people hate to hear that, but uh, the person.

Speaker 3:

I don't care where. You hate to hear it or not. This is how I feel about the guy.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely All right, guys. Uh, we're going to break away real fast Cause I'm going to show you something that uh happened over the weekend at the River City Wrestling Con in St Augustine, florida. Teddy got a little upset. Somebody was coming up to see D-Von Dudley and well, teddy wanted to start throwing hands. Here's what I'm talking about Exciting.

Speaker 3:

D-Von getting excited because there's a few men who are never going to change our love. I'm excited. D-mark is excited because it's a new man.

Speaker 1:

It's never gonna change our love.

Speaker 3:

Give me the poli Letters.

Speaker 1:

Oh, we get letters we get your letters every day, Mailman, mailman mail. Today, Reach right in and pull one out those letters. I love those letters.

Speaker 3:

Let's find out what you've got to say.

Speaker 1:

Mailman Mail today, Alright so let's see.

Speaker 2:

Question number one comes from Ricky, retired on X. He's actually got a couple questions here. Wwe under Vince McMahon was very generous at times, such as sending a jet to pick up harley races uh, harley race when he was not uh feeling good and was near death to bring him back home never looked for praise. That being vince the wwe under tko, will wwe lose this type of generosity?

Speaker 3:

Well, I don't know. You know that's kind of left up to the individual. You know that was Vince's own decision right there. So that would be left up to whoever's running TKO. That decision would be left up to them. So I don't know whether they'll be that generous or not, but Vince was like that. You know what I mean. If he'd go out of his way, you know, if that's what he needed to do to get you there or to help you.

Speaker 2:

I do think that it's probably more likely that Vince would do that over a full company that's going to have to go through red tape just to get a yes or a no, whereas Vince would just say go do it, you know. So this probably is a difference when it comes to that Pretty classic lady commenting saying uh, good to see jackie. Uh yeah, by the way, teddy. Um, the story you told about her driving. After that, that incident happened and she drove so long past where she was supposed to go. Did you ever ride with her again? No, jackie may be watching this, by the way. I sent her an invite. Are there any other stories you can tell us about jackie? Uh, some things that happened with you and Jackie may be watching this, by the way, I sent her an invite.

Speaker 2:

Are there any?

Speaker 3:

other stories you can tell us about Jackie, some things that happened with you and Jackie. I think I say she is such a cool lady. Yeah, I rode with Jackie some more. You know, like I said, things like that happen, man, you know. I mean that's on the road, you're tired driving back in the day, man. So you know, stuff like that happens. But no more stories. Jackie was just always a sweet person. I just enjoy working with her man and she's so easy to get along with. But now she can. I've seen her a little mad before now and that's you kind of don't want to see that.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, no, no, no. I can imagine you wouldn't want to see that at all. Let's see Zach is in here. What is Teddy's thoughts on Ron Killing's return to WWE?

Speaker 3:

Well, like I said, congratulations to him, hope everything works out for him, just the act of God. I'll always say that if this is a shoot which I believe, but you never know but, like I said, congratulations to him and I hope everything works out for him All right, let's see.

Speaker 2:

Here's another question. Wwe raised prices to ridiculous levels for a PLE. It's getting unaffordable for a dad to take kids anymore. Do you think WWE is?

Speaker 3:

reaching a wall and will they experience a drop in viewership and revenue. Well, you know, here's what I think about that. You know it's kind of called greed. You know what I mean, and when you get greedy, sometimes that causes you a problem. Like I said, you know. Right now, you know you're living in this world. The economy is really not in a whole lot of good shape.

Speaker 3:

You know their job you know a lot of people out of work out there, so they can't afford to, uh, you know, buy those tickets and I understand what were they in vegas.

Speaker 2:

How, what, what was the price of them? Oh, they were in the that. Well, I think that yeah yeah, it was, it was well. I think the actually was 30 000 for some of the ones down by the ring I. I can understand selling high-priced tickets, you know, down around ringside, but even $30,000 is like, are you kidding me? But I mean, there's even, I think, if I've heard this correctly, summerslam. The cheapest ticket up in the nosebleeds is just under $1,000, I think. I think that's not right, I agree.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it takes away from. I mean, you know, teddy, I remember the days when you could go to a ball game. You know my, you know your parents could take a. He'd grab his son If his son was in the baseball or football, whatever, take him go watch a game somewhere and it didn't cost you so much money. It was real Americans with what have real value. They don't have a lot of money to spend and that's what made sports so popular. Am I wrong in that?

Speaker 3:

Well, that's just not the country we live in now. Okay, things have changed. So you know you have to be prepared for the change or you have to hopefully that you can change with it. But a lot of people are not going to be prepared and some of them not going to be able to change with this change. Like the prices and stuff are going up now. I went in Walmart today and I just got a few things and I got there. It's $200. You know, and I'm like Jesus Christ, you know, but what can you do? You know you have to have these things. I just thank God I had the money to pay for them. But there's some people that are not going to be that lucky. They ain't going to have the money to pay for that stuff. So kids are going to be going hungry and you know it's really sad. So let's just hope and pray that things get better.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I hope it does. You know where organizations like WWE I don't see and I made me wrong about this. I don't know the man, but I never saw Vince McMahon or never felt like he was trying to get every penny out of somebody's pocket, and I feel like that's what wwe is right now. I feel like they're trying to suck every single penny they can out of your pocket without care as to what it may do to you or your family, or or maybe your fan base dwindles because they can't afford to come see your show anymore. That's going to end up biting them in the ass in the end. Is you're going to price yourself out of the fans because the average fan can't come see you live and suddenly they just don't care as much?

Speaker 3:

Well, here's what you got to look at. They did it. They bought the tickets at WrestleMania.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, but again they sold fewer. They didn't have a sellout, uh, and they they said they didn't care as long as they got the dollar amount they were looking for right right you know I can't imagine a time whenever vince said every ass in this, you know, every seat in here, this building, better have an ass in it, and you know.

Speaker 3:

And they don't think that way now yeah, well, you know, it's just like I said, it's called change.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, unfortunately uh, kayla, uh, franklin's in here, we saw her over the weekend and she's saying yeah, I enjoyed seeing you both over the weekend. Yeah, we got to see you too.

Speaker 2:

Uh, kayla, we enjoyed that uh yeah everything's fine with your dad and everybody else. I know that you've had some issues there, so hopefully everybody's doing okay. Uh, and let's see she's in here again. She, I just got finished. I'm sorry.

Speaker 2:

That's why I enjoy indie shows. You get to interact with the wrestlers and it's affordable. Uh, she's talking about the pricing of wwe tickets. Yes, uh, and that's why I think that there is such a surge for independent wrestling right now, because anybody can truly have a tv station. I mean, if you want to say, well, I'm on'm on TV, well, go to YouTube, go to Roku, go to one of these things, anybody can be out there. As long as you put Teddy and I, we're here. It's just he and I, there's no machine behind us. So it can be done. And I think that when wrestling becomes too expensive, like WWE just like Kayla says the independents start becoming more palatable to people who have maybe never thought I want to go see one, and then they do and they fall in love with what they're seeing and the people there. So it's a good thing for the indies maybe, but not so much for the WWE. Let's see Sin on Facebook is asking who was the most inspirational person during your time in wrestling and who was the most negative?

Speaker 3:

Oh.

Speaker 2:

God.

Speaker 3:

The most person that I really enjoyed was John Bradshaw Latham JBL. He was a great guy. You know there were some guys that were negative, you know, but not really nothing to really talk about. You know, I'd just sit back and kind of watch them and just stay away from them. So that's how you do that. So let the negativity keep on going and just try to, you know, stay away from all that.

Speaker 2:

If you want to be a part of the show, simply drop us a comment and we will throw it up on the screen and talk back and forth with you and answer your questions, or just let you vent something out. If you rather do that and you can share this around as well, please do that as well, because we got a good number of you in here right now. We got about 10 more minutes before we get out of here. Let's see Pretty classy lady's asking did you see the clip yesterday of Kenny Omega spitting up blood from an elbow drop? Aew is doing too much, teddy. I know you didn't see it because you don't watch AEW. I saw the video and I thought it was overacted. Let's put it that way. I think that's what she's kind of saying herself. It may have been.

Speaker 2:

Oversell. Yeah, yeah, you sell it way too much.

Speaker 3:

Well, I don't know.

Speaker 2:

That could have been. The guy might have hit him right in his throat. Well, I think he got the elbow drop, came across his chest, but I didn't pay that close attention. Who knows, sometimes I think they do go a little bit overboard, especially with the blood and AEW. They need to back it off and just use it once in a great while. Lily Hunter oh, hey, look here, this is the girl, teddy. I know you probably don't recognize that name, but liveth is uh in the s, uh, icw and other groups up there around the area where we were in st louis. She was the tall girl yeah, that's all right, yeah look here, lily.

Speaker 2:

Uh, I hope everything's going great for you. Uh, man, I'm still waiting to see you on TV one day, cause you are a. I don't want to make this sound bad, but you're a freak of nature, you're. You are a big girl, attractive, and I think that you're going to do very well. Just keep listening to Bob Orton. If I'm not mistaken, that is your trainer, one of your trainers, and if that's the case, you just keep listening, because you probably getting really good advice.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, not good advice. She's getting the best advice that she could ever get.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, she said. I'm sad I didn't make it over to say hi at the St Louis Fan Fest, but we did pass each other and I did say hello to you because I wanted to make sure you knew I was there because I've been keeping up with you. Let's see, we do have another Georgia independent wrestling fan here that I know. Ellen is in here and she's asking hey, teddy Buddy says hello, he just graduated high school.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I know exactly who Ellen is. Hey, I get a chance to see her at some of the shows that I'm on every once in a while. I think the last time I saw her I was in Atlanta. No, I mean, I'm sorry, Probably when we were together.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, where did?

Speaker 3:

I go. It was for an industrial, I think it was out there or something. I went out there and she was out there hearing Buddy. They were at that show.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, buddy, her and Buddy have been at so many of the shows I've been to, you know, in the later years when I was going to the independent shows. Sweet lady and a great son. And congratulations, by the way, buddy, for graduating high school, that. And congratulations, by the way, buddy, for graduating high school, that's a big deal, yeah, man.

Speaker 2:

Congratulations. Let's see here. What else do we have? I got a name association. We'll have to get to that in just a minute because I want to make sure I'm trying to get you out of the way. For some reason I got you froze up on here. Oh, don't do this to me now. You know, screen will freeze up there we go there we go now I gotta be alive.

Speaker 2:

It's meant to be. That's right. Let's see. Zach, what kind of day could you give me about how to be better at commentary? Uh, I have been working since 2018. It built my brand. I'm not sure if I understand the question. Zach, what kind of uh advice maybe could you give him about uh being better at commentary?

Speaker 3:

I can't give any advice. I don't. I never heard him, never seen him, never. You were on his podcast.

Speaker 2:

He's one of the guys in the podcast from st louis that we did a show with um.

Speaker 3:

Okay, yeah, but you haven't seen enough of his work to be able to tell that yeah, I'd have to see that and to be able to determine what advice you you know. So I haven't seen any of that.

Speaker 2:

I'll tell you something that I have learned Just simply be yourself that way. Anytime you have that mic open, if you speak, that's you, and anytime that you do something, it's you. You don't have to think about it, and that's the same way as commentary. Just be you and let it roll.

Speaker 3:

And another thing try not to step on each other, terry, just be you and let it roll. And another thing try not to step on each other. That's real important. Try not to do that. You know, give the guy at least get. Let him get his point out, get a pause in there. So when you start, you're clean, but when you're stepping on each other, that's confusing.

Speaker 2:

There's another good suggestion here and then we'll move on to the next one. But listen to what your guest is saying. Too many times I watch a podcast or listen to them and the interviewer is asking questions, but he's not really listening to the answers. He's just getting ready for the next question. Sometimes you miss golden nuggets when you do that, because they may say something that you can take that conversation a little bit differently, in a different direction, and make it completely different. So never shut them down too quick and listen to what they're saying. Let's see, zach, what kind of no. Okay, that's what I thought it was. Okay, here we go and he says he thanks us very much. We appreciate you, you're very welcome, man.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, man, all right, we got name association time and we got time for maybe just a few of these, teddy, before we have to close out again, if you've got a question, pop it in here. We'll throw it up on the screen before we're gone. Name association Give me a thought or a memory or anything else you can at the following people Gold dust.

Speaker 3:

What about it?

Speaker 2:

Any thoughts, any memories?

Speaker 3:

Oh, gold dust oh yeah, uh, dustin, yeah yeah yeah, I had a great time working with him back in the day. I remember a good story I had there one time and I know this was wrong, but you know we didn't care back in the day. He wasn't old enough to buy beer so I had to go in and buy beer for him. So now you know that was dead wrong. Anything could have happened. I'd have never lived it down.

Speaker 2:

What would you have done if Dusty found out?

Speaker 3:

Oh, I don't know, come here, baby, listen, listen.

Speaker 2:

Don't influence my son.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah. What's wrong with?

Speaker 2:

you Pretty classy lady. She's asking what are your favorite Atlanta eating spots.

Speaker 3:

At my house.

Speaker 2:

Before you said that, I knew exactly what you were going to say. I don't order.

Speaker 3:

no restaurants. I don't eat out. I don't do none of that. It's me and Mr Ruva. So we eat at home every day.

Speaker 2:

We love it, curly man, saying that you don't think you've got your t-shirt yet. If that's the case, if you haven't received your t-shirts, I think everybody else has already confirmed. If you haven't sent me your info again, let me make sure that everything I have is correct and I didn't send it to somebody else. Who knows.
